Iranian Terror Victims’ Families Condemn Italy’s MEK Support
WANA (Mar 11) – Following the Italian Parliament’s decision to honor a member of the anti-Iranian terrorist group Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) with an award, the families of Iran’s terror victims have issued an open letter condemning the move.
Outrage Over Award to MEK Member
The letter denounces the Italian Parliament’s presentation of the “Women of Courage 2025” award to a member of MEK, a group responsible for the deaths of thousands of Iranians. The recognition, granted by the Vice President of the Italian Parliament, has sparked outrage, particularly among the families of 23,000 Iranian terror victims.
During the award ceremony, the recipient openly declared allegiance to MEK and supported its so-called “resistance units,” which have been involved in sabotage operations, bombings, and attacks on governmental and religious sites in Iran. The recipient also echoed the rhetoric of the group’s leader, further fueling controversy.
This is not the first time Italian officials have extended support to MEK-affiliated entities. In late 2022, the regional government of Piedmont awarded its annual human rights prize to another member of a MEK-linked organization in Italy.
MEK’s History of Violence
MEK has a long track record of terrorist activities spanning over five decades, including suicide bombings, assassinations, mortar attacks, kidnappings, and torture. The group is responsible for thousands of deaths in Iran, as well as attacks against American and Iraqi citizens. It also collaborated with Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq War.
Due to its violent history, MEK was previously listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. Although it was later delisted due to political considerations, its reputation remains deeply tarnished. The Iranian people and families of terror victims continue to hold MEK accountable for its past crimes.
Criticism of the Italian Parliament
The letter strongly criticizes the Italian Parliament for abandoning its duty to represent and protect its own citizens by instead supporting a notorious terrorist group. It argues that ongoing political backing for MEK by certain Italian lawmakers reflects either ignorance or moral corruption.
The families of Iran’s terror victims urge Italian legislators to adopt a fair and principled approach, cease their support for MEK, and focus on serving the interests of their own people.
